In February 2020, US aluminum imports plummeted by 47%, with only 238,000 tons imported. Due to the impact of the new crown epidemic, governments around the world ordered the prohibition of large-scale factory operations, the metal industry was hit hard, and the aluminum industry fell into a state of slow sales and hoarding of goods.

 

Between January and February of 2020, the cumulative aluminum output of the United States was 563,000 tons, which was 372,000 tons lower than last year. The heaviest proportion of imported aluminum was crude metals and aluminum alloys.

 

In February 2020, Canada became the main source of imports for the United States, importing a total of 150,000 tons of aluminum production, including 145,000 tons of crude metals, aluminum alloys and 5,300 tons of scrap aluminum. The main import source of semi-finished aluminum products is Saudi Arabia, with an import volume of 7,450 tons.

 

US aluminum output from China fell to 5,070 tons, down 15,600 tons from the same period last year. The amount of scrap aluminum imported by the United States from Mexico plummeted by 86% to only 8,520 tons.

 

Imports have decreased, but exports have been relatively stable.

 

In February 2020, the United States exported a total of 236,000 tons of aluminum products and aluminum scrap, which was only 0.4 million tons lower than the same period in previous years. The main exporters were Mexico, Canada and India.
